Mean Mommy Easter

This Easter was not one for the record books. (Or maybe it was, depending on how you look at it.) This was one of those years where everything sort of goes wrong and you just kind of...drop the egg. See, it all started when I asked my little ladybugs to clean their playroom. They didn't want to...so they didn't. We tried again the next day and again they didn't clean their playroom. After a few days I said: Can you guess what happened next? GASP! Mean Mommy had to call the Easter Bunny and tell him not to stop at the yellow farmhouse this year. I felt horrible doing it, but my word is my word and they needed to learn.Later on we were driving on our way home from something or other and the girls were in the back chattering about the Easter Bunny and presents and candy and eggs. It's hard to explain, but it felt like that part in old movies when the lady daintily takes off her gloves and smacks someone in the face with them, you know? So, I asked them what Easter is REALLY about...and they couldn't tell me. They couldn't tell me! After ALL of the Family Home Evenings and all of the scripture reading and classes at church and picture books and cartoons for heaven's sake!- they couldn't tell me. That's when I snapped. I weighed it out in my mind for a moment, took a deep breath and told them THE TRUTH about Easter. Frankly, enough is eeeeenough. They didn't cry. They weren't upset. Ryen just said, "You mean you have been keeping this from me the whole time!??!!!!" She acted like I had just pulled a fantastic April Fool's Day joke on her. I honestly think she was more impressed than disappointed. Maddie just sort of shrugged and moved on. So there you go. I feel so much better, I can't even tell you. I feel like a weight has been lifted off me. It's wonderful!

And, in case you were wondering, I DID keep my word and didn't buy them a single present this year. I did snag some candy for an egg hunt, but I had to take that away too...because they still hadn't cleaned their playroom.

Before you start feeling tooooo bad for my dear little ladies, you should know that we did take them to an Easter party where we had a lovely breakfast, made a Peep diorama, and went on an egg hunt. They were thrilled.

  1. Nope, I don't feel bad for them one bit :) And it doesn't sound at all like you're a mean mommy. It sounds like they did more for Easter than we did!

  2. So awesome Megan!! I was feeling really fed up with Easter this year too. And Jake informed me that we would not be giving Easter candy to the kids again. Soooo......next year will be a whole new kind of Easter for us.
Good for you for being honest and putting everything back in proper perspective. I kind of feel the same way about Christmas but that is a whole other holiday. :)
You're not mean at all.....just thoughtful.
